Convicted of a murder he most certainly committed. . .

A suicidal John Doe is confused.  He is tired of being the victim, of living in the Gruesome's shadow.  As a riot ensues at Nelson Prison, John is visited by a five year old apparition named "Max".  He suspects the boy's image may somehow be a clue to his identity, a vision of life long since forgotten.

As John's psychiatrist, Doctor Leslie Reynolds, continues her struggle to both overturn John's conviction as well as discover the truth about his past, John is finally confronted with the ultimate decision -- to live or die.
